Maxwell Institute Impact Event

On April 27, there was a a 2-hour meeting of the Maxwell Institute staff to discuss about impact. The goal of the event was to provide a general overview on research impact, why it is important and how  impact can be achieved. The Director of Research at our School, Jacques Vaneste, explained the rules for producing a case study. Three members of the MI presented their case studies (Andy White, Ben Leimkuhler, and Colin Aitken). Sergio García Quiles, Impact Tsar at our School, showed an analysis of some data from last REF. Sergio and Gavin Gibson (Head of School at Heriot Watt) showed three case studies outside the Maxwell Institute. Chris Mountford and Alex Cassidy from ERI explained how ERI can support staff to achieve impact. Iain Gordon, Head of our School, introduced a scheme to relief staff from teaching and administration tasks in order to spend a semester engaged in impact activities. There was an interesting discussion at the end of the event.

The presentations are available:

1) "REF Impact: The Rules of the Game", Jacques Vaneste (Director of Research, School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh).
"Temperature Controls in Molecular Dynamics", Ben Leimkuhler (Head of the Applied and Computational Mathematics Research Group, School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh).
"Support for Knowledge Exchange and Commercialization", Chris Mountford (Business Development Executive, ERI) and Alex Cassidy (Commercial Relations Executive, ERI).
"Impact Case Study: Mathematical Modelling Drives Conservation Efforts to Protect Red Squirrels", Andy White (Department of Mathematics, School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, Heriot-Watt University).
"A Brief Overview of the Mathematics Area in the REF 2014", Sergio García Quiles (Impact Tsar, School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh).
6) "
A Look at Some Case Studies Outside the Maxwell Institute", Gavin Gibson (Head of the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, Heriot-Watt University) and Sergio García Quiles (Impact Tsar, School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh).
7) "Creation of Impact: How an Impact Study Came To Be", Colin Aitken (Head of the Statistics Research Group, School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh). Additional files: REF case, brochure.
