R and RStudio

R/RStudio are being made available via a remote service called Citrix.  In order to access the remote service from our computer labs you need to use the Citrix client software. You can access the citrix service in two different ways. Either download the client and run it on your University PC or connect to it via a web browser.

There is no need to use this service on your own personal computers because you can download and install R (https://cran.r-project.org) and RStudio (https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download3) for free.

Accessing the Citrix server by downloading and installing the Citrix client on your computer

Instructions are given below or you can watch the video: https://media.ed.ac.uk/media/t/1_o9fnlfbv

NOTE: During the startup of RStudio for the first time it will warn you that it is creating a folder to store any additional R modules that you download. This will be created on your University network drive (M). Your personal  R files will also be stored on this drive by default.

  1. Download the Citrix Receiver installation software (called CitrixReceiverWeb.exe)
  2. Run the exe file by double clicking on it from your Downloads folder on drive M or by opening it directly from your browser
  3. During installation, if asked, do not enable single sign on
  4. Once the installation has completed you will see that a new icon (with white circles in it) has appeared in your list of running programs at the bottom right of your screen
  5. Right click on the icon and select Open
  6. A pop-up window will appear allowing you to add an account. Enter remote-access.hss.ed.ac.uk then click Add
  7. You will now be asked to login twice. On both occasions enter your University login name preceeded by "ed\", e.g.  ed\jbloggs and your password will be the one you use to login to the University PCs (normally the same as EASE)
  8. Now that you are logged in to the Citrix service, click the plus sign on the left and then click All Apps at the top. Select the RStudio icon (it will be the only one available to you)
  9. You are now ready to run RStudio. Simply click on the RStudio icon to start the program

Note that on subsequent connections, you will only need to login once and the RStudio icon will be available without having to add it again.
