Vacation Scholarships

What are Vacation Scholarships?

Vacations scholarships allow students to undertake a vacation project. Vacation projects give students an opportunity to explore an area of mathematics outside of the curriculum over the Summer. In particular, they enable a student to do one or more of the following:

  1. To research a topic or carry out original research with the guidance of a professional mathematician, without the constraints of studying for credit.

  2. To gain an appreciation of the nature of advanced mathematics and what it is like to work with it in a research environment.
  3. To gain a broader and more professional understanding of mathematics and some familiarity with some of the research ideas being worked on by lecturers in the School.

Students who successfully complete a project may have this recorded on their HEAR transcript.

Sources of Funding

There are a number of sources for funding, including the School. Although there are different conditions for many of these, broadly

  • Scholarships funded by the School, or with supervisors from within the School, are normally restricted to students on degree programmes controlled by the School of Mathematics.
  • They are awarded competitively.
  • They are for continuing students and primarily for third year students, though outstanding fourth year MMath and second year students may be considered.

Many of the scholarships and bursaries have different deadlines and conditions so the relevant websites must be consulted for precise details. Although some are awarded externally their submission may either be via the College or require the Head of School’s approval.

Students considering a vacation project should discuss this with their Personal Tutor. (A number of the scholarship application forms will require your personal tutor to complete a section, so an early discussion will help.) If you have a potential area you are interested in they may also be able to suggest a potential supervisor.

The Vacation Scholarship organiser, Harry Braden, is also happy to discuss queries. (If you email please put ‘Summer Vacation Scholarships’ in the subject.)

Academics interested in supervising projects should contact Harry Braden; if you have a suggested topic that would also help. (If you email please put ‘Summer Vacation Scholarships’ in the subject.)
