School Windows PCs

Summary

- School PCs run Windows 7 Professional.
- Visitors have access to all software installed on PCs.
- Visitors may use PCs in our general computing lab and university student labs.

Access to the Windows PCs

If you do not have a Windows PC in your office, you may use the PCs situated in our general computing room 5313. Note that your Windows account will also allow you to login to all university lab PCs some of which are open 24 hours a day. Details on university labs are available at http://www.ucs.ed.ac.uk/fmd/central_labs.html.

Logging in to the Windows PCs

The login name and password given to you by I.T. support will allow you to login to the Windows PCs. However, this is a short term password. Please register with the university's EASE service in order to set a new Windows (also known as Active Directory) password. Note that if you have already registered with EASE (e.g. during wireless registration) you do not need to do so again as your Windows password will now be your EASE password.

To register with EASE :-

  • Start your browser and go to the URL http://www.ease.ed.ac.uk/register.
  • In the What is your university username box type in the username given to you by I.T. support.
  • Enter your initial password (given to you by I.T. support) then tick the box to accept the university's Computing Regulations
  • Click the Continue to next step box.
  • Next you will be asked to complete a series of security questions and answers. Once you have completed this step, click the Continue to next step
  • Next you will be asked to set your own EASE password. Tick the box to also use this password for logging into Windows (Active Directory). If successful you will see the message Your EASE account is now ready to use.

Your Windows password has now been changed.

Data storage

Most of our PCs have a local directory which can be used by all users (C:\Workspace). Alternatively, if you have a network drive H , you may store files there. This drive is available across all School Windows PCs and is backed up nightly.

What printers are available ?

By default visitors do not have access to our network printers (in 5212). However, I.T. staff will be happy to add your login name to the access list. Please contact them if you wish to use our printers. Details on what printers are available is at IT Support » Printing » Printing from Windows
